JANIS GOODMAN: Coastal Reverie

June 27th, 2026 - August 1st, 2026

gallery neptune & brown is pleased to present our second solo exhibition with Janis Goodman.

Janis Goodman, Summer Glow Over Cove, 1999, Water and graphite on paper, 22 x 30 inches

Every summer for the past thirty years artist Janis Goodman has escaped the bustle of the city to take refuge in the tranquility of Greenlaw Cove on Deer Isle, Maine. Spending her days kayaking, Goodman ventures into nature as both a participant and an observer, capturing idyllic scenes both through photography and in her mind’s eye. Returning to land, Goodman begins to draw the awe-filled moments with the immediacy of her subject fresh in her mind. Back in her DC studio, she completes each piece transforming her original graphite and charcoal drawings into colorful renderings that are both “observational” and “invented.”

In this series, Goodman provides viewers with an intimate glimpse into her private refuge through rhythmic, energetic, and meditative drawings and paintings that capture both the coast’s ephemerality and timelessness. In her own words, Goodman states:

“I begin my drawing journey at the source I sit by and watch the cove, listening to the wind and water, following air currents, birds in flight, and constant flow of tide. The source is the same every day but changes every minute. The water can rise twelve feet during high tide and recede completely at low tide. Kayaking on its water, partially submerged in flow, I feel the pulse, the rhythm, and the calm, as well as the potential for danger.”

Concurrent with our exhibition, Where Water Keeps Time: Graphite Drawings by Janis Goodman will be on view at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center.

Goodman was born in New York and has been an integral part of the DC art community since arriving at George Washington University for her Master of Fine Arts.  She is Professor Emerita of Fine Art at the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design and was the arts correspondent for the WETA-TV series “Around Town,” for 25 years. Goodman is the co-founder and a member of Workingman Collective. Janis Goodman’s work has been
exhibited internationally and is in public and private collections across the globe.
