gallery neptune & brown is pleased to present our first solo exhibition with American photographer, Vincent Ricardel. This exhibition highlights Ricardel’s captivating images of mystical yet universal encounters found across the globe—from Tokyo and Seoul to Paris, Venice, and Los Angeles. Drawing on his vast experience in editorial, commercial, and fine art photography, Ricardel's practice relies on patience and experimentation, waiting for decisive moments while innovating with techniques such as expired film, light leaks, and physical alterations with paint.
One theme permeates all of his work: an element of the unexpected. Through careful observation and an embrace of spontaneous lighting, Ricardel captures frames that provoke curiosity and convey mystery, proving that the most remarkable photograph often emerges from the most persistent chase.
Speaking about his practice, Ricardel states, “I fuse my sense of lighting with spontaneous moments to give my photos a twist that I hope will provoke curiosity and perhaps convey a bit of mystery and occasionally, humor.”
Ricardel’s photographs have been exhibited nationally and internationally from the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art to most recently in Seoul, South Korea. In 2011, he received the GRAPHIS’ Best in Photography award for the book he co-authored: Arch Top Guitars: The Journey from Cremona to New York. Ricardel served as the Senior Advisor at the National Endowment for the Humanities (2017-2021) and has given numerous photography workshops. He taught at the Center of Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University. Ricardel holds a Bachelor’s of Arts from American University in Washington, DC.
