JOSEPH KEIFFER: AS FAR AS ONE CAN SEE

DECEMBER 9, 2023 - JANUARY 6, 2024

gallery neptune & brown is pleased to announce the return of celebrated American artist Joseph Keiffer with a remarkable exhibition of contemporary landscape and still life paintings entitled As Far As One Can See.  Drawing on his educational background in art history and philosophy, Keiffer’s paintings pay homage to his deep knowledge of the American and European 19th-century artistic tradition.

In this exhibition, Keiffer captures tenets of tradition, accessibility, and intimacy in his elegantly crafted compositions. His process begins with an oil sketch done outdoors and he later completes the painting in his studio. This follows the practice of the late 18th-century French painters, as well as many American landscape artists.

His interest in representing light is intimately bound to his quest to interrupt the passage of time.  Through this pursuit, Keiffer captures the landscapes of two continents through the changing seasons and diverse weather conditions. Keiffer’s still lifes also carry an oblique reference to the passage of time and they revitalize the age-old tradition with a modern twist. He narrates scenes with unique color palettes, and rhythmic compositions that reveal his playful spirit.
Keiffer divides his year between his New York studio and painting trips in New England and Europe. What predominates in his travels and his work is the search for visual beauty.  Prevalent throughout Keiffer’s work is his search for beauty. Kieffer states “Beauty is that which is glorious to behold, ravishing to hear, a delight to the senses. That is the space in which I hope to operate - to make something which reminds one of the possibility of a higher universal order”.

Kieffer states “Beauty is that which is glorious to behold, ravishing to hear, a delight to the senses. That is the space in which I hope to operate - to make something which reminds one of the possibility of a higher universal order”.

Born in New York City to a father who was a painter from New Orleans and a mother who was a writer, Joseph Keiffer's formative years were enriched by years spent in Europe, and his artistic journey began when he was seventeen in Paris, France. Keiffer's paintings are included in numerous prestigious private collections as well as institutions like the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the Bryn Mawr College Special Collections Library in Pennsylvania, and the Pfizer Art Collection.
