Janis Goodman: Infinite Journey

On view December 4, 2021 - January 29, 2022

gallery neptune & brown is pleased to present a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Janis Goodman. Goodman has been an ardent educator, organizer, and supporter of the arts in Washington since arriving for her Master of Fine Arts at George Washington University. A familiar face in the DC community, she is an arts correspondent for Around Town, WETA-TV.

Infinite Journey is a new group of oil paintings that were realized over the last three years. The canvases are saturated with translucent layers of pigment creating fluid expanses of color and light. These layers not only add depth to the compositions but create a sumptuous palette. The immersive square and circular paintings evoke the natural world – foliage, the atmosphere, and even the earth’s molten core come to mind. Goodman’s rich and inventive colors and her meticulous method of painting create an ethereal and reverent image. Through these paintings Goodman explores her relationship to the environment. Her technique softens the boundary of the painting, thus inviting contemplation. The paintings reflect an exploration of the changing climate and the collective duty to care for the natural world.

Goodman's work has been exhibited internationally in Japan, Russia, Italy, The Netherlands, Peru, and Germany. She is the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and DC Commission for the Arts and Humanities. She has been awarded many residencies worldwide. Goodman has been a Professor of Fine Art at The Corcoran School of Art + Design at George Washington University since 1988 and co-founded the Workingman Collective in 2005.
